Healthy Weight for Your Height

The healthy weight range for your height is the weight that gives a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. To find it, multiply your height in meters squared by 18.5 and by 24.9, or in pounds, multiply your height in inches squared by 18.5 and 24.9, then divide by 703. At 5 ft 6 in, that's 115 to 154 lb; at 170 cm, it's 53.5 to 72.0 kg.

How the range is worked out

The BMI formula, turned around, gives weight for any BMI: weight = BMI × height².

At 170 cm (1.70 m): 1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89, so 18.5 × 2.89 = 53.5 kg and 24.9 × 2.89 = 72.0 kg

At 5 ft 6 in (66 in): 66 × 66 = 4,356, so 18.5 × 4,356 ÷ 703 = 115 lb and 24.9 × 4,356 ÷ 703 = 154 lb

Why it's a range, not one number

People of the same height have different frames and muscle, so a range of around 40 pounds (18 kg) at average heights is normal. Where you fall in it matters less than staying within it. Some guidelines use a narrower range, 18.5 to 22.9, for adults of Asian descent.1 Asian BMI.
