Practice Calculating BMI

Practise calculating BMI one step at a time: each problem gives a height and weight, and you enter the answer to each step, from converting height to the final BMI. Press Check to see if you're right, and get a hint if you're not. Choose metric, imperial or mixed units, and build a streak of correct answers.

The steps

Metric (cm and kg)

  1. Convert height to meters: divide by 100.
  2. Square it.
  3. Divide weight by that number and round to one decimal place.

Imperial (feet, inches and pounds)

  1. Convert height to inches: feet × 12, plus inches.
  2. Square it.
  3. Multiply weight by 703.
  4. Divide and round to one decimal place.

Tips

  • Keep enough decimals. For metric, keep at least four decimal places in the squared height to get the BMI right.
  • Use (a + b)² for squaring. 67² = 60² + 2 × 60 × 7 + 7² = 4,489. More shortcuts.
  • Round only at the end. Rounding early can change the last digit.
